The new-look Asda Foundation Nottingham 10K was today hailed a great success as thousands of runners crossed the finish line to hand local charities a cash boost.
Launched in 2016, it was the first time the race had been held at the University of Nottingham campus. The run moved to its new home following a partnership between Run For All, organiser of the event, and the university.
Run For All is a not for profit company and a legacy of the late charity fundraiser Jane Tomlinson CBE, who despite being diagnosed with an incurable cancer completed a series of incredible endurance events. Towards the end of her life, Jane would make the 150-mile roundtrip for treatment at Nottingham City Hospital.
As part of the partnership, £5 of every entry was donated to the Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre, based at the university.
Runners followed an exciting new route that stuck almost exclusively to the campus, one of the most scenic in the country, and took in Highfields Park boating lake.
First across the finish line was Patrick Townsend in a time of 34mins 40secs. Dylan George took second place in 34mins 47secs with Philip Nind in third in 35mins 08secs.
Nicola Swaffield was the first woman home in 38mins 30secs followed by Natalie Bunce who clocked 40mins 39secs for second spot and Carolyn Hay who took third in 40mins 57secs.
Many of those taking part in the run took the opportunity to raise money for the event’s partner charities – Canaan Trust, Notts County Football in the Community, Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre and Nottinghamshire Deaf Society.
Mandy Hepworth, Asda Foundation coordinator, said: “The Asda Foundation Nottingham 10K took no time at all to settle into its new home at the university. It proved to be a great location for spectators and runners alike and marks a new chapter for this popular event.”
Tristan Batley-Kyle, Run For All’s head of events, said: “A big thank you must go to the University of Nottingham for providing us with such a superb route. We are also extremely grateful to everyone, particularly all the volunteers, who worked so hard to ensure our first 10K at the university went so well.”
The 10K is sponsored by Asda Foundation, University of Nottingham, Gem Radio, Motorpoint, Arla Protein, High5, The Derby Runner, Runderwear, Aftershokz and banankick.
