Eleanor Baker broke the Sheffield 10K course record by four seconds as Hallamshire Harriers took the top two places in the men’s race.
Charities were celebrating today as thousands of fun-runners, fundraisers and club runners crossed the finish line at the 2023 Sheffield 10K.
Organised by Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All, in partnership with Sheffield City Council, the 10K race started on Arundel Gate at 9.30am.
Set in the heart of South Yorkshire’s famous Steel City, the 10K route then took runners out of the city centre and along Ecclesall Road, Rustlings Road, Graham Road, Riverdale Road, Endcliffe Vale Road, Brocco Bank, before returning back along Ecclesall Road for the big city centre finish back on Arundel Gate.
As part of the event, runners had been encouraged to fundraise for their own charity of choice or one of the event’s partner charities. This year’s partner charities include; the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Cavendish Cancer Care, Paces, Sheffield Futures, St Luke’s Sheffield Hospice, Snowdrop Project, Roundabout and the Children’s Hospital Charity.
Not just a route with something for everyone to appreciate, participants were greeted with a goody bag of rewards, including post-run treats and a hard-earned bespoke medal at the finish line.
The day saw all corners of the city come out to show their support, from running clubs, spectators, volunteers, schools and universities. The Sheffield 10K is a true representation of the incredible communities in and around the city of Sheffield.
The day also saw 17 teams from across the region come together to take part in the Sheffield 10K Team Challenge. Teams of colleagues, running buddies and friends came together to battle it out to be crowned Team Challenge champions. The results will be announced in due course.
Eleanor Baker was the first female across the finish line in 00:35.35 followed by Jennifer Cartmell who clocked 00:38.19 for second spot and Anina Atkinson who took third in 00:40.47.
It was a tight finish for the men with just two seconds separating Hallamshire Harriers club mates. The first male across the finish line was Alexander Smith in a time of 00:32.09. John Birch took second place in 00:32.11 with Thomas Shaw in third in 00:32.51.
The Arena Group Sheffield Mini and Junior runs also took place earlier in the morning. Families and friends of all abilities came together for a morning of sport and fun, choosing to run either the 1.6km course or 2.4km junior course.
Both events also started and finished on Arundel Gate, with the Mini run starting at 11.45am and Junior starting at 11.55am.
A great way for parents and children to stay active and healthy together, children were encouraged to fundraise for the event’s main partner charity, the Children’s Hospital Charity in Sheffield.
The money raised through donations buys life-saving equipment, funds vital research and treatment for thousands of children from across the world, and helps us create a comfortable, engaging environment for all patients at Sheffield Children's Hospital.
Tristan Batley-Kyle, Operations Director at Run For All, said: “Congratulations to everyone that took part in this morning’s Sheffield 10K and Arena Group Sheffield Mini and Junior events.
“A fabulous day and an amazing atmosphere, it was great to see Sheffield brimming with so many participants and supporters.
“The enthusiasm and support from everyone involved, from the participants themselves to the many spectators, sponsors, partners and volunteers, all ensured the day was a fantastic success.”
The event’s official sponsors include Sheffield City Council, Arla Protein, High 5, Coopah, Shokz, Up & Running, Gradwell, Marathon Photos Live, the Yorkshire Society, Kommune and the Business Desk.
