The Asda Foundation Middlesbrough 10K was today hailed a huge success as runners from across the region crossed the finish line of the popular charity road run.
Not only did Middlesbrough runners wow the crowds, but the first female came up top with a brand new course record for Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All.
And their efforts in the event – formerly the Tees Pride 10K – is predicted to raise tens of thousands for local good causes.
The race was organized for the first time by Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All, working in partnership with Middlesbrough Council and Everyone Active.
A not-for-profit company, Run For All is part of the legacy of the late Jane Tomlinson CBE who, despite being diagnosed with an incurable cancer, completed a series of incredible endurance challenges to raise nearly 2 million pounds for children’s and cancer charities. It organises the Asda Foundation Series, which includes a 5K, ten 10Ks, four half marathons and the Yorkshire Marathon.
An outstanding day of running got underway at 9.15am with a 3K fun run followed 90 minutes later by the 10K.
Starting and finishing in Hall Drive, the course took the participants along Acklam Road, Ladgate Lane, Marton Road, Marton Burn Road, Keith Road, Emerson Avenue and Green Lane.
First home was Joshua Cowperthwaite in an impressive 31:21. He was followed by Lewis Gamble-Thompson who clocked 31:57 to take second place, with Stephen Jackson third in 31:58.
The first woman over the finish line was Gerda Steyn in 33:05. Hollie Elliott took second place in 38:06 and Rhona Marshall was third in a time of 38:48.
First wheelchair over the finish line was Bret Crossley in 25:23.
While runners could raise money for any good cause of their choice, many were supporting the event’s partner charities – Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Daisy Chain, Leo’s, South Cleveland Heart Fund, South Tees Hospitals Charity and Teesside Family Foundation.
Mandy Rivett, Asda Foundation coordinator, said: “Congratulation everyone who took part today to make the Asda Foundation Middlesbrough 10K such a success. It’s particularly pleasing that so many of those taking part were raising money for some wonderful charities. Encouraging people to have fun, get fitter and support charitable work is what the Asda Foundation Series is all about.”
Tristan Batley-Kyle, Run For All’s head of events, said: “A lot of people put in a great deal of work to organize this event and we are grateful to them all, particularly the many volunteers who selflessly give up their time to help our runners have a safe and enjoyable day.”
The Middlesbrough 10K is sponsored by the Asda Foundation, Middlesbrough Moving Forward, Everyone Active, BBC Tees, Arla Protein, High5, Motorpoint, Taylor Wimpey, Runderwear, Aftershokz and bananakick.
