Runners cross the finish line as Leicester 10K returns with brand new route
The city of Leicester came alive today as runners of all abilities and ages, including fun runners, charity fundraisers and club runners came together to take part in the Leicester 10K.
Organised by Run For All, the race kicked off at 09.00am just outside Jubilee Square. The course then followed a route into the city centre before heading onto Granby Street and into Victoria Park. The beautiful greenery of the park then weaved participants through the University Leicester before returning back towards Jubilee Square for the big city centre finish.
Some came for a personal challenge, a few hoped to win and others simply aimed to get around the 10K course, but all helped make the Leicester 10K a brilliant success, with thousands of pounds raised for many local and national charities.
As part of the event, runners have been encouraged to fundraise for their own charity of choice or one of the event’s partner charities. This year’s partner charities include; the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Leicester Tigers Foundation, LAMP (Leicestershire Action for Mental Health Project) and Leicester City in the Community.
The winning male wheelchair athlete was Tim Barnett in a time of 55:19.
First across the finish line was Anthony Woodward in a time of 32:06. Dan Tate took second place in 32:40 with William Knight in third in 33:27.
Grace Carson was the first woman across the finish line in 32:51 followed by Sarah Horner who clocked 38:04 for second place and Kirsten Hayes who took third in 38:46.
Tristan Batley-Kyle, Director of Operations at Run For All said: “It has been fantastic been back in Leicester today for the 10K. With a brand new and exciting route for participants to try out, we hope all those who took part enjoyed this fresh and updated running experience.
There was a great atmosphere as the people of the city came out in full force to support the runners as they made their way around the course. We want to thank our fantastic marshals, volunteers, spectators, sponsors and partners who helped to make the event an unforgettable experience for those taking part today.”
The Leicester 10K is supported by Leicester City Council, BBC Radio Leicester, High 5, Shokz, Up & Running, Coopah Running, Arla Protein and Marathon Photos.
Organised by Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All, the Leicester 10K forms part of the Run For All series of runs which, along with Leicester, includes events in Sheffield, Bury, Middlesbrough, Hull, Leeds, York, Derby, King’s Lynn, Ipswich and Lincoln.
Entries for next year’s Leicester 10K aren’t open just yet, however participants are encouraged to visit www.runforall.com to register their interest for 2024.
