South Yorkshire came alive today as a new course record was set for the fastest female runner in a Sheffield Half Marathon.
Phillipa Williams completed the half marathon in 1 hour, 14 minutes and 50 seconds, beating her own record set in 2019 by almost three minutes.
Sarah Lowery took second place in 1 hour, 21 minutes and 14 seconds, with Kate Russell taking third place in a time of 1 hour, 23 minutes and 16 seconds.
Just two seconds separated the first and second place in the male race. Tommy Power was the first male across the finish line in 1 hour and 8 minutes, followed by Daniel Haworth who crossed the line in 1 hour, 8 minutes and 2 seconds.
Scott Hinchcliffe took third position in a time of 1 hour, 9 minutes and 43 seconds.
The Outdoor City Peaks Challenge was tied in the males' race between Tommy Power and Daniel Haworth, who both came in at 5 minutes and 57 seconds. Tommy Power won the 10K Challenge with a time of 30 minutes and 35 seconds. Phillipa Williams was crowned the winner in the women’s City Peaks and 10K challenges, coming in at 6 minutes and 27 seconds, and 33 minutes and 50 seconds respectively.
Thousands of fun-runners, fundraisers and club runners of all ages and abilities came together to take part in today’s event.
Some came for a personal challenge, a few hoped to win and others simply aimed to get around the 13.1-mile course, but all helped to make the Sheffield Half Marathon a brilliant success, with thousands of pounds raised for a number of local and national charities.
Famous for its mile-long climb up Ringinglow Road along with stunning views across the Peak District, the Sheffield Half Marathon involves a special triple challenge. In partnership with the Outdoor City, participants had the chance to be named champion of the Outdoor City Peaks Challenge – a one-mile hill climb up Ringinglow Road – the Outdoor City Timed 10K challenge – a 10km sprint to the finish - and to be crowned winner of the overall Sheffield Half Marathon.
Organised by Run For All, the run kicked off on Arundel Gate and followed a route out of the city centre along Ecclesall Road, before reaching Ringinglow Road and the ‘Outdoor City Peaks Challenge.’
Runners then made their way past the Norfolk Arms and into the surrounding Peak District countryside. Upon reaching the seven-mile mark, runners met the ‘Outdoor City Timed 10K’ as they made their way along Hathersage Road.
Heading back towards the city centre, runners travelled along Limb Lane and onto Ecclesall Road South before returning along Ecclesall Road and back to Arundel Gate for the electric city centre finish line.
Tristan Batley-Kyle, Operations Director at Run For All, said: “It was fantastic to be back in Sheffield today for the Sheffield Half Marathon.
The enthusiasm and support from everyone involved, from the participants themselves to the many spectators, sponsors, partners and volunteers, all ensured the day was a fantastic success.
A huge well done to everyone who took part, whether you were raising money for charity, aiming to beat a personal best or just out to enjoy the experience.
We already can’t wait to return to Sheffield later in September for the 10K and for the half marathon again in 2024. We look forward to seeing you all there.”
As part of the event, runners have been encouraged to fundraise for their own charity of choice or one of the event’s partner charities. This year’s partner charities include; the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Sheffield Hospitals Charity, Sheffield Age UK, Cavendish Cancer Care, Macmillan Cancer Support, St Luke’s, Snowdrop Project, The Children’s Hospital Charity and Sheffield Futures.
The Sheffield Half Marathon is supported by Sheffield City Council, The Outdoor City Sheffield, BBC Radio Sheffield, Erdinger Alkoholfrei, Arla Protein, High 5, Coopah, Up and Running, Shokz, Regen Physio and Marathon Photos.
