Team TRIB3 to run the Sheffield Half Marathon for St Luke’s Hospice
A team of 100 runners from TRIB3 Sheffield will be taking on the Sheffield Half Marathon next week in aid of St Lukes Hospice.
The hospice looks after people over 18 from across the Sheffield region, with all kinds of terminal illnesses, including end-stage neurological, heart, kidney and lung conditions, cancer, and HIV.
Paul Simpson, coach at TRIB3 Sheffield took it upon himself to rally together a team to run this year’s half marathon, “At TRIB3 we have a great relationship with St Luke’s and it was my idea to put together a team of 100 people and raise a minimum of £100 each to help this outstanding charity.” Paul said.
Over the past three years, TRIB3 Sheffield has raised more than £40,000 for St Luke’s. They have now already smashed their £10,000 fundraising target for the Sheffield Half Marathon and the total continues to rise, now at over £15,000.
Many members of the team have experienced first-hand, the fantastic services the hospice offers for families directly affected through the loss of close loved ones.
We spoke to Lottie, Faye, and Kate who have all been directly supported by St Luke’s over the years.
“I am running in memory of my beloved Stepdad. David died at the height of the pandemic when strict restrictions were in place. Without St Luke’s he would have died in hospital alone. St Luke’s allowed us to be with David, they cared for us, and most importantly made sure David was comfortable so he could die with the dignity he deserved. St Luke’s is a special place” Lottie Linell
“I am so excited about completely my first Sheffield Half Marathon. I am pretty nervous about THE hill but Paul & the whole TRIB3 team have been so supportive from arranging weekly runs to sharing successes & challenges on our WhatsApp group. Their support & encouragement has definitey made the training so much more manageable. I am doing this run & raising money for St Luke’s as I’ve lost both my parents in the last 4 years to cancer. They both passed away in a hospice & the care they received made the world of difference to both them & our whole family. Palliative care is so important but receives so little NHS funding. Hospices like St Luke’s rely on people fundraising so I am happy to do my bit.” Faye Draper
“I can’t explain how tough it was to watch someone deteriorate so quickly, but St Luke’s looked after her so well in the last week of her life and I will be forever grateful for how they looked after her and her family through that time and beyond. It was her wish to be there in her last days and there couldn’t have been a better place. I didn’t know what to do with myself after she died so I threw myself into work and exercise and signed up to take part in the 2019 Half Marathon. The amazing support in Sheffield helped me round and I will admit to having a huge cry as the route took me past St Luke’s.” Kate Noble
Those taking part all differ in their running abilities; pre-training many had never tackled a 5K before never mind the distance of a half marathon.
Paul says, “As a team, we are really looking forward to completing the Sheffield Half Marathon while celebrating together the journey we have taken from the very first 5km to the finish line on race day.”
