Following a year without running events in the City, today thousands of runners, joggers and walkers helped clock up a huge cash boost for local charities today (Sunday 1st August) at the Asda Foundation York 10K as the popular road race celebrated its return in style.
Enthusiastic crowds, which have become a hallmark of the event since its launch, created a tremendous atmosphere as they cheered the runners along the route
Attracted by the chance to run through York’s historic streets, runners of all abilities came from across the UK to take part in the popular road race. Starting and finishing on Knavesmire Road, close to York Racecourse, the route took in famous landmarks including the Minster and York Millennium bridge.
First home was Liam Rabjohn of Richmond and Zetland Harriers in a time of 32mins 08secs. Adrian Mussett from Colchester Harriers AC who took second place in 32mins 44secs, with Thomas Shaw of Worksop Harriers third in 33mins 38secs.
The first woman across the finish line was Charlotte Mason from City of York AC in 35mins 44secs. Second place went to Becky Penty of York Knavesmire Harriers who finished in 36mins 58secs ahead of Ruth Naylor from Horsforth Harriers who was third in 36mins 59secs.
Organised by Run For All, the run is one of the highlights of the Asda Foundation 10K Series
Many people took part for a good cause of their own choice or one of the partner charities which this year included – the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Candlelighters, Changing Lives, Macmillan, Martin House, York Mind, St Leonard’s Hospice, The Island, Yorkshire Air Ambulance and York Against Cancer.
Tristan Batley-Kyle, Head of Events at Run For All, said: “We are enourmously grateful to everyone - runners, spectators, sponsors and particularly our volunteers - whose hard work made today’s 10K so enjoyable.”
