Thousands cross the finish line at the Sheffield Half Marathon

Some came for a personal challenge, a few hoped to win and others simply aimed to get around the 13.1 mile course, but all helped make the Sheffield Half Marathon a brilliant success, with thousands of pounds raised for local and national charities.

The Sheffield Half Marathon is famous for its mile-long climb up Ringinglow Road and thousands of participants were up for the challenge, being rewarded for their efforts with stunning views across the Peak District.

The run kicked off in Arundel Gate and followed a course that took runners along Ecclesall Road, Knowle Lane, Ringinglow Road, Sheephill Road, Hathersage Road, Limb Lane and then back into the city centre for the big finish at Arundel Gate.

Large crowds in the city centre created a special atmosphere as they cheered the runners to the finish line.

First across the finish line was Mohammed Saleh in a time of 01:09:13. Michael Young took second place in 1:11:03 with Jonathan Harding in third in 01:11:57.

Sarah Lowery was the first woman across the finish line in 01:21:06 followed by Alice Daniel who clocked 01:22:18 for second spot and Eleanor Baker who took third in 01:22:58.

The Sheffield Half Marathon involved a special triple challenge which gave participants the chance to be named champion of the Outdoor City Peaks Challenge – a one-mile hill climb up Ringinglow Road –  the Outdoor City Timed 10K challenge – a 10km sprint to the finish - and to be crowned winner of the overall Sheffield Half Marathon.

The male winner of the Outdoor City Peaks Challenge and 10K challenge was Mohammed Saleh who completed the mile-long hill climb in 00:05:57 and the challenge in 00:31:17, while Eleanor Baker was the fastest female in the Outdoor City Peaks Challenge and 10K challenge with a time of 00:07:04 and 00:37:13 respectively.

Tristan Batley-Kyle, Head of Events for Run For All, said: “This was our first event of the 2022 season and what a way to kick it off. The sun was shining and the enthusiasm and support from everyone involved, from the participants themselves to the many spectators, sponsors, partners and volunteers, all ensured the day was a fantastic success.

“It was brilliant to see so many participants cross the finish line and we can’t wait to return to the city to do it all over again in 2023.”

Participants raised thousands of pounds for charity by taking part in the event, including for the Sheffield Half Marathon’s partner charities - St Luke’s Hospice, the Snowdrop Project, Cavendish Cancer Care, Sheffield Age UK, The Children’s Hospital Charity, The Sheffield Hospitals’ Charity, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, PACES, Sheffield Futures and Jane Tomlinson Appeal.
