Adrian, of West Yorkshire, is one of our inspirational runners taking on the Ali Brownlee 5K this coming Sunday. Running for a cause to close to his heart, Adrian is fundraising for Yorkshire based children’s cancer charity, Candelighters.
Each year, around 150 children in Yorkshire are diagnosed with cancer. When a child receives a diagnosis, lives are turned upside down instantly, not just for the child but for their parents, grandparents, siblings, extended family and friends. Getting well again can be a long and challenging journey, emotionally, physically, and financially.
Candelighters bring light to families affected by childhood cancer by providing emotional, practical and financial support, along with investing in vital research to improve the outcomes and lives of children with cancer.
Adrian, who hasn’t done any serious running since 2011, has been inspired to run by a pupil at the school he works at, whose brother is undergoing treatment for leukaemia.
Adrian tells us more about his motivations for running below.
“I've been persuaded to run (I am to running what Prue Leith is to Rugby League, and haven't done any serious running since 2011) by a Year 6 pupil at the school I work at, whose brother is undergoing treatment for leukaemia.
Candlelighters, the charity I'm raising money for, who are based in Leeds, have been brilliant supporting her and her family through what's obviously been a major trauma. At the end of last term, we raised almost £2,000 in a day for the charity, and my contribution is on top of that - her target was £1,000 (and mine was £100), so we've done pretty well, especially with SATs in the mix! I'm hopeful for a bit more sponsorship as I get closer to the event, and if we could end up with a total of £3,000 for both fundraising efforts, that would be fantastic.
Compared to what the people Candlelighters help daily are going through, the pain of running 5K (in a pink wig) pales into insignificance!

Good luck Adrian, we hope you enjoy the day and raise lots for such an important cause.
