Ben Mallison, Headteacher at The Ruth Gorse Academy will be taking part in this year’s Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon. With friendship at the true heart of his reason to run, Ben was inspired by Kevin Sinfield to support his long-term friend and Leeds Beckett University graduate, Mark Walls.
Mark’s daughter Mollie is three years old and was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome in December 2021. After noticing Mollie wasn’t hitting milestones and had begun to lose her skills, Mollie’s parents started to explore her symptoms and soon later received the devastating news. Mollie can no longer walk, talk, sit unaided, hold things, play with her toys or feed herself, just as other three-year old’s can do.
Based in Guiseley, Ben is used to rolling hills while out training and has spent several training sessions making his way up the infamous and some may say ‘grueling’ climb of the Chevin. For what will be his first marathon challenge, Ben has been motivated by the ever-growing running community in Leeds and the sheer power of the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon.
“Rett Syndrome is a neurological condition which most often strikes previously healthy little girls between their first and second birthday, leaving them with multiple disabilities and medical complexities for life. Gene therapy clinical trials are currently under way in Canada and at the start of the year, the therapy was approved in in the UK.
“The chance this Gene Therapy has made to children just like Mollie, truly is a miracle.
“To help along with some fundraising I have decided to sign up to the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon and in aid of the patient advocacy and research organisation, Reverse Rett.
“If you can spare a pound or two, please donate via the link below as every single penny will count towards giving Mollie and other children like her the life she truly deserves.”
Good luck Ben! We hope you have a fantastic marathon experience with us and raise important funds for such a great cause.
The Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon, in partnership with Clarion is taking place on Sunday 12th May, the same day as the Leeds Half Marathon.
