Amanda Wassell, a headteacher based in Rotherham will be taking on the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon in memory of her late friend Sue and to raise awareness and much-needed funds to support those living with MND.
Find out more about Amanda's story below.
"My name is Amanda Wassell and I am the headteacher of St Bede's Catholic Primary School in Rotherham. In August 2021 my lovely friend and colleague, Sue Chadbourne was diagnosed with MND. In December 2021 she had to retire on ill health having worked in the school for over 20 years. Sadly, on 6th January 2023 Sue died peacefully in Rotherham hospice surrounded by her family and close friends.
I heard about the new Rob Burrow marathon last year and despite never having run one before, I promised Sue I would train for this in order to help raise awareness and much-needed funds to support people living with MND.
I am very lucky to have the support of my friends from the running club I am part of, Kimberworth Striders. Not only are they helping me by accompanying me as I build the miles on my long runs each weekend but they have also signed to run the marathon and support me on the day.
Sue has two daughters, Emma and Hannah (pictured with her above). Emma has also signed up to run the marathon in memory of her mum.
If you would like to donate to the MND Association, my just-giving link is located below."
