This is James, Leon, Charlie and Oscar. They are all taking on the Sheffield Mutual Sheffield Half Marathon on Sunday 23rd March. They are raising money for Headway, a charity that means a lot to them all.
Headway is a charity to raise funds for people who have suffered from a brain injury. Brain injury can challenge every aspect of your life – walking, talking, thinking and feeling – and the losses can be severe and permanent. A brain injury can happen to anyone at any time. When it does, Headway is here to help.
In 2022, their friend unfortunately suffered a severe brain injury due to an accident. This life-altering event forced him to drop out of university. He was a trainee paramedic with aspirations of graduating and beginning a career in the NHS, but sadly, were lost, and it seemed impossible to recover from it.
James said, “Despite the immense challenges, Headway has been a beacon of hope and support. Their remarkable work has played a crucial role in helping him regain his confidence and build a new life while navigating the complexities of his injury.”
Headway understands the profound impact of brain injuries and provides invaluable support to those affected, ensuring individuals do not feel like a burden to their loved ones. The care and assistance their friend has received from them has been nothing short of life-changing. With their help, he has found new opportunities and is now volunteering which is contributing significantly to rebuilding his confidence and work toward a life of independence.
The four of them were all inspired by the incredible support Headway offers, and they have decided to take action. Last year, they participated in the Sheffield Mutual Sheffield 10K, witnessing numerous amazing fundraisers supporting various great causes. They have never participated in a half marathon before and they wanted to push themselves and their limits even further while doing it for a cause they are all very close to.
They believe that every bit of effort and sacrifice will be worth it to support Headway and the vital work they do. Their friend’s experience has shown them first hand how important it is to have organisations like Headway that provide support during tough times. They want to make a difference to this amazing charity.
