Michael King, champion supporter of St Luke’s Sheffield Hospice will be one of the many runners on the start line of next weekend’s Sheffield Mutual Sheffield 10K.
Michael will be running in memory of his wife Michelle, who was a St Luke’s patient before she passed away in 2019. Becoming well known on the Sheffield fundraising circuit, Michael has already raised over £14,000 for the hospice.
Psychiatric nurse Michelle was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 but having survived that initial illness, she was later found to have developed a brain tumour and her long battle against cancer came to a close at the age of 54.
“St Luke’s hospice gave such magnificent care when my wife Michelle needed it the most, so to honour her memory and to raise much needed funds, I have decided to take on three challenges this year to raise funds for the hospice.
“So far, I completed an abseil down the side of Sheffield Hallam’s University’s Owen Building and I was joined by twenty-seven friends and supporters for a two-day sponsored walk from Scarborough to Whitby via Robin Hood’s Bay, places that we both visited together. I’ll be running the Sheffield 10K in September with Mi-Shell on my back.
“Michelle used to jump on my back and say she was ‘Mi Shell’ so I know she’d have been laughing if she could see me.
“St Luke’s is such a special place that gave magnificent care to my wife when she needed it the most. The Hospice has to raise £10.5 million this year for it to continue and hopefully my fundraising will help towards this target.
“I know that my Michelle would want me to try and help, especially as it involves running in Sheffield, a place she loved. I couldn’t think of a more appropriate way to end this year’s events.
“I will be honest and admit that I was apprehensive about Michelle going into St Luke’s because I thought it was just a place where people go to die,
“I couldn’t have been more wrong though - it was a positive, happy place and offered such great support to Michelle and the whole family.
“They give you support and love - and it is the love they give you that is so important.”
“I only fund raise once a year, as I know how difficult things are financially for everyone, therefore despite doing three events throughout the year, I only ask for you to sponsor me once. Any donations are greatly appreciated and never taken for granted.
Michael will be easy to spot amongst the masses as he will be wearing his full turtle suit, so be sure to cheer him onto the finish line if you spot him!
