Steve is one of our inspirational runners taking on the Derbion RAM 5 Mile on Sunday 30th June. Steve is on a mission to raise awareness of Arthritis and inspire people to run.
After being diagnosed with severe arthritis in his left help, Steve is determined to complete the RAM 5 Mile to show that nothing can stop him from running despite his diagnosis.
"Arthritis affects millions of people in the UK which can affect all ages and unfortunately has no cure. It causes inflammation and pain in the joints making running difficult. I want to show people that it doesn't stop you from taking on a running challenge and doing hard things."
“I also have arthritis in my ankle and know I’m on borrowed time with my running so any opportunity to race and show my kids my medal I take!
"I did my first half marathon at 16 (may have submitted the wrong birth year). I did a full marathon in 2009 in honour of my dad who passed earlier that year.
"In 2020 injuries and the lockdown made me quit running. In 2022 after putting 2 stone on and struggling to do things without running out of breath I restarted running.
"I’ve been in a lot of pain whilst running and after a visit to the GP and hospital, I was informed that I had severe arthritis in my left hip and would need a hip replacement in the future (most people who see me run notice I run with a limp) I also have arthritis in my ankle and know I’m on borrowed time with my running so any opportunity to race and show my kids my medal I take! Every time I do a race like the RAm 5 Mile, I often wonder “will it be the last time I do this”
Good luck Steve, we can't wait to cheer you on at the finish line!
Entries are still open for the Derbion RAM 5 Mile and Ramathon, which is taking place on the same day.
